Petrotec Restarts, after production halted
Germany-based biodiesel manufacturer Petrotec is restarting biodiesel production in January 2008 following a temporary halt in production.

In October 2007, the company stopped biodiesel production in response to unfavourable market conditions that made it impossible to cover biodiesel production costs.

'Sales prices for 2008 have recovered somewhat compared with the very low level of recent months,' Petrotec's CEO Roger Boeing comments. 'Petrotec has broadened its client base in the blending market and also developed new clients. The order backlog for 2008 is already satisfactory.'

Petrotec's existing biodiesel plant in Südlohn-Oeding has an annual capacity of 85,000 tonnes and its new plant in Emden's deep-sea port will have a capacity of 100,000 tonnes a year, processing used cooking oil. Petrotec expects to ramp up biodiesel production there in April 2008.

'The German federal government is still duty-bound to support the biofuels industry,' Boeing says. 'Over the last 12 months it has not managed to enable the biodiesel industry to budget business accurately, and has severely damaged this fledgling industry.'

This is something that the biofuels industry in the UK is now experiencing, unfortunately there has not been a clear statement for the UK government in support of the industry in the same way as the German one.
